“Get comfortable with being uncomfortable,” our guide Heinrich says matter-of-factly as we start Trekking to Everest Basecamp in Sagamartha National Park. This could not have been more true. The next two and a half weeks, three city slickers from Jo’burg trekked through the awe-inspiring Himalayas, surrounded by snowy 8 000 m peaks in some challenging conditions.
Here are a few highlights and what I learnt about mountaineering and myself during our adventure.
Choose wisely when Trekking to Everest Basecamp
The company through which you choose to do a trek like this is critical – it can make or break the experience. I learnt the hard way that there are people that offer these trips that are not qualified to do so. I signed on with another company with high hopes, but a training trip to the Drakensberg not only knocked my confidence, it made me feel like there was no way I could do this. I trusted my gut and cut my losses after a
few months of getting nowhere.
